This course will develop individual skills and competencies to enable deployed advisors to perform advising functions effectively while supporting partner nation counterparts in their reform and modernisation efforts. This will enable deployed advisors to contribute to sustained capacity development within partner nation processes and structures.

The course will develop and improve the ability of deployed advisors to advise partner nation counterparts in accurately assessing and prioritising requirements within the partner nation system, and in monitoring the effectiveness of assistance provided.

This includes the following.

  • Understanding NATO policy, mandate and legal framework to act effectively in the NATO environment, including cooperative security, NATO partnership, defence institution and capacity building programmes, NATO standards and NATO resources.
  • Developing and maintaining cultural awareness, both in terms of the specific cultural, social, historical, institutional background of the country and/or region; and in terms of cross-cultural communication.
  • Assessing the local environment; understanding partners’ requirements, capacity, constraints, and internal institutional dynamics.
  • Establishing constructive and effective relationships and applying mentoring, advisory, and conflict resolution techniques (including through remote engagements) in order to facilitate the development of appropriate local solutions.

Maintaining high ethical and professional standards, and fostering coordination with NATO.
